The main part of the CHESS HEROES project is the development of a series of books providing coaching materials for players who have learnt the moves and would like to play competitive chess. The books are based in part on an analysis of almost 17000 games played at Richmond Junior Chess Club over a 30 year period, and in part on the latest academic research into how and when learning takes place. They are not intended to be read by younger children, but provide coaching materials for teachers working at this level, and for older learners who are able to teach themselves. Broadly speaking, the books are suitable for players rated between 500 and 1500, although some of the quiz questions will be challenging for stronger players.

There is, as far as I know, nothing comparable available in English, and, in general, very little available at this level.

A series of articles and essays explaining the background and philosophy behind the MINICHESS and CHESS HEROES projects will also be available.

The second drafts of the first four books are available for download in pdf format for users to test and provide feedback:

CHECKMATES FOR HEROES
CHESS TACTICS FOR HEROES
CHESS OPENINGS FOR HEROES
CHESS ENDINGS FOR HEROES

The second draft of the fifth book (which uses the knowledge acquired in the first four books to develop chess skills) is now also available:

CHESS PUZZLES FOR HEROES

The sixth book, CHESS GAMES FOR HEROES, will be available at some time in the first half of 2021.

Please contact me if you have any comments or suggestions.

I'd also like to hear from chess publishers who might consider publishing these books, as well as anyone interested in developing the books commercially
(for instance by producing interactive eBooks).

Again, please contact me if you're interested.
